Caleb’s Story

When Moses led the nation of Israel through the wilderness of Paran to the border of Canaan, he sent twelve spies—one from each tribe—to scout the land God had promised them. After forty days, the spies returned with their report: the land indeed flowed with milk and honey, but its people were strong, its cities large and fortified, and they had even seen giants.

Caleb urged the people to go up at once and take possession of the land, declaring they were well able to overcome it. However, the other spies discouraged the congregation, saying, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.”

The report caused the Israelites to rebel against God. They talked of choosing new leaders and returning to Egypt. Caleb and Joshua stood before the people, affirming that the land was exceedingly good. They pleaded with them not to rebel against the Lord or fear the inhabitants, assuring them that if the Lord delighted in them, He would give them the land.

The people refused to listen. As a result, that entire generation wandered in the wilderness for forty years until they all perished—except Joshua and Caleb.

After Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River conquering Jericho and many other of the cities, Caleb approached Joshua and proclaimed,

“And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the LORD spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.” (Joshua 14:10-11 NKJV).

Joshua granted Caleb the city of Hebron as his inheritance. At eighty-five, Caleb drove out the inhabitants and took the land.

  • Caleb in the Bible was known for his wholehearted faith, courage, and strength. Even at 85 years old, he remained physically strong, spiritually bold, and ready to conquer new territory for God (claiming the hill country and driving out giants).
  • The “Sons of Caleb” are men who aspire to follow in his footsteps — to live with the same unwavering trust in God, spiritual vigor, and determination to “take ground” (advance God’s kingdom) no matter their age.
